What’s Trending in the Kitchen?
Based on what you’ve experienced yourself, hear from family members and friends, and read about or see online, can you guess what’s trending in kitchens in 2022?
An annual report, recently completed and released by Houzz, provides a breakdown of survey data collected from homeowners that recently completed a kitchen remodel or are planning to do one soon.
It provides information on the size of renovations, what features homeowners are spending the most on, average island lengths, and the primary material used for new cabinetry, among other things. Although many of the top responses are easy to guess, you may be surprised to see what is rising and falling in popularity.
We invite you to take time today to check out the full 2022 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study or read an abbreviated version featuring a MA Peterson project, and stay up-to-date on what’s trending.
Midwest Home Design Awards
Earlier this month, MA Peterson attended the Midwest Home Design Awards alongside many other respected designers and builders in our industry. This formal awards event stood out based on the outstanding level of quality in design and craftsmanship as a whole for the first, second and third place winners.
MA Peterson received four awards at the event – two first place and two second place. We are thankful to receive the awards and appreciate all who helped make these projects a success! What a way to put a bow on a successful year.
Here is a list of the projects that won:
First place: Contemporary Foyer
This project received high praise from the judges, being called, “a case study in the minimal, practical, and stunning entryway – both form and function abound.”
First place: Addition Project
Second place: Contemporary Master Suite
Second place: Finished Basement
For the complete list of first, second and third place winners, visit the Midwest Home Design Awards website.

Two MA Peterson projects featuring an addition with a creative secondary garage stall and a fun lower level bar for entertaining, were recently awarded a Remodeler of Merit Award (ROMA) through Housing First MN in the Addition: $300,000 and Over category, and a Silver Contractor of the Year (CotY) award through NARI-MN in the Residential Interior Element $30,000 and Over category.

Learning More About Single-Wall Kitchens
When it comes to kitchens, there are a variety of layouts that exist; Galley, Single-Wall, L-Shaped, or U-Shaped to name a few. While each have their list of pros and cons, learning more about each one and seeing them in context will help you understand which is the best for you and your space.
In a recent Houzz article, “How to Make the Most of a Single-Wall Kitchen,” you can read about the Single-Wall layout, learn how to make it work for you, and see our featured Deephaven project as an example.
Whether you’re interested in updating your Single-Wall layout or using this configuration on your next project, we recommend you read this article!
Creative Contemporary Staircase Featured on Houzz
At MA Peterson, we take pride in the creative solutions we design and build for homeowners. One of these creative elements, a contemporary staircase in our custom Edina home was recently featured in a Houzz article showcasing unique or hidden storage solutions.
Without a traditional coat closet available in this foyer, we designed a creative closet beneath the stairs that appears hidden in the built-in cabinetry.
In addition to this closet, the creative staircase features a custom welded metal railing and stringer, subtle stair lighting, floor to ceiling natural light at the stair landing, an integrated bench seat, and a side door to the basement crawl space that looks like cabinetry.
Whether you’re looking to add a fun design element to your home or trying to maximize your storage potential, we recommend you check out this list.

“We are thrilled to be part of the White Oaks Savanna development. The reverence for the land, space and sightlines for the entire development is in complete harmony to how we design and build. Housing Day on Capital Hill - 2019 Housing Day
When you think of home builders and remodelers, you may not think of politics. It’s also pretty unlikely that you imagine tradespeople gathering together at the Capitol. It might seem unlikely, but that is exactly what happens every year at Housing Day at the Capitol organized by BATC-Housing First MN and Minnesota Association of Realtors. MA Peterson was proud to gather with our fellow industry professionals at this year’s event on March 4th.
We spent our morning attending a rally with all the event attendees where we heard more about the issues facing housing, specifically regulatory burdens placed on builders and remodelers by cities and the state. Minnesota carries one of the highest regulatory burdens in the country making it almost impossible to build an affordable home. Unfortunately, there is not one or two large regulations that we can have reassessed, but instead hundreds of fees on each home that add up to an unrealistic amount.
Our afternoon was spent going to our scheduled appointments with our local representatives and senators. This is a really exciting opportunity as we find ourselves in front of the people who can truly make a difference for our business and our bottom line. As we were walking around the Capitol grounds we were also happy to see so many young professionals taking part in the event, as well as more women than we have seen in the past. It was also a great excuse to ogle the amazing architecture at the Capitol building. Our inner architecture geeks were loving it.
We ended our day with a celebratory reception where we were able to connect with long-time industry friends and peers who we don’t often get to see. It is always fun to hear stories from other builders and remodelers who deal with the same challenges and have the same passions as we do here at MA Peterson. Overall, the consensus seemed to be that the event was a success and our legislators were open to supporting our issues when the time comes.
Great job to BATC-Housing First and MAR on a great event. We will be back next year!
